This was an interesting assignment. I typically hate doing research papers, but this was actually an assignment that I enjoyed reading and learning more about. I'm interested in pursuing a career in the movie business, so the impacts of this issue are relevant to me. I found that it is difficult to protect your ideas but also get your ideas and creations to people who want them. The Internet has made it easier to share digital information across borders. This is especially the case where movies are now made digitally, and you have sites like YouTube and Vimeo to share movies. I can think of a couple of instances where I violated copyright laws and where I didn't to get what I wanted. There are a few TV shows that I like. One was on Fox, the other on ABC. I was never able to watch them when they were broadcast because of work, or it conflicted with my kids bedtime routine. These shows creators made them available to view online, either for free with commercials, or purchase on I-tunes to download and own. This worked great for me. Another show I wanted to see based on a popular novel series was made by a subscription cable channel. They offered no way to view their show without subscribing to cable. No I-tunes or anything. I didn't want all the other channels. I sought out a streaming service to view the episodes. The quality was terrible, but it was all I had. I've since bought the show once it came out on BluRay, but it was frustrating to me at the time that the shows creators limited the choices of viewing so much. In this new digital age, it makes sense to me to make your content available in multiple formats and places so that people can see it. If they have access to it, they won't have to choose methods that were illegal.
