MATH 1010 Intermediate Algebra

For this course I was given an assignment to use Utah population data, and take the data and apply it to linear functions and graphs.  I used years as the x coordinates for my graph and the population numbers as the y coordinates.  I used the data to find the slope of a linear function that could model it.  The function could then help predict in what year Utah would reach a certain population level.  Or, if given a certain population level, what year it would be.

Reflection

When I studied Algebra in Jr. High and High School over 10 years ago, I just went through the steps to learn what I needed to pass the tests and get the good grades.  I felt there was little, or no, real world application to the concepts I was learning.  Looking back now, I realize my teachers were trying to show me applications for the concepts, but my heart wasn't in the right place to truly learn and take that knowledge to other areas of my life.  Learning and reviewing these concepts again now has helped me to appreciate its applications.  I can see where the principles of linear functions could help me to better manage and track my personal spending and finances.  It can help to see relationships in my health by comparing weight, cholesterol, PSA, and A1C levels over time.  I guess being a teenager at the time I had little concern for those things.  Now, having had a few more life experiences has helped me to have a greater appreciation for knowledge.
