BIOLOGY 1090 Human Biology
For this course, I was asked to pick one of the "Savvy Reader" assignments in the textbook and answer the questions for the assignment. The "Savvy Reader" assignments take short articles on science related topics and ask the reader to evaluate them. Some of the evaluation criteria would be; are they primary or secondary sources, how was the data obtained, controlled experiements or correlational studies, is there any bias or propaganda techniques, etc. I selected the assignment from Chapter 2 which presented a newspaper article from a London newspaper called The Independent. It presented the supposed benefits of drinking a new brand of bottled water with additional oxygen added called Oxygizer.

Reflection
I've begun to appreciate the skills this assignment taught me. In society today we are bombarded with all kinds of news and information. How can anyone decided what to believe and what is true? Critical thinking and evaluating of information is important for any choice we make. Whether it is buying a house and knowing your mortgage options and which is best for your situation, or making informed choices about your health and diet decisions. We live in a consumer culture and everyone wants their product to sell. They may not tell complete falsehoods about their products, but they may leave out information that would change a buyers perspective. It's important for everyone to be able to develop the skills to take information and look at it from a scientific and questioning perspective and be able to know where to go to get the best information to make informed choices.
